The Government Affairs Committee advances the Wisconsin Chapter’s presence and influence on state and federal policy matters affecting public works professionals and the communities they serve. Working in alignment with APWA National government affairs initiatives, the committee serves as a resource for advocacy, legislative awareness, stakeholder engagement, and public policy discussions throughout Wisconsin.
The committee monitors legislation, identifies emerging issues affecting public infrastructure and municipal operations, and promotes opportunities for members to engage in advocacy efforts that support the public works profession.
Monitor state and federal legislation affecting public works agencies.
Inform Chapter leadership and members of key legislative and regulatory developments.
Support APWA National government affairs initiatives and policy priorities.
Coordinate advocacy efforts that advance the public works profession.
Develop relationships with elected officials and partner organizations.
Facilitate information sharing between Chapter committees through committee liaisons.
Educate members on important public policy and legislative topics affecting Wisconsin communities.
Current Priorities
Current areas of focus include:
Organizing an APWA Wisconsin Public Works Lobby Day at the Wisconsin State Capitol.
Advancing recognition of public works professionals as First Responders.
Tracking policy issues related to transportation, utilities, water resources, PFAS, public works funding, and salt liability and certification programs.
Building partnerships with ASCE, ACEC Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin League of Municipalities to support common legislative and infrastructure priorities.
Expanding member participation and engagement in government affairs activities.
